Dhaka Medical College and Hospital is the largest and oldest Medical college in Bangladesh it’s located in Dhaka. It is situated in the Bakshibazar near close to the Dhaka University. The Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology BUET.
The Hospital’s original Building was built in the British period before the partition of Bengal in 1905. Before building the medical college building the building was being used. The secretariat headquarters of East Bengal and Assam. in the year of 1921 when Dhaka University was founded. The building was shared and Medical College Hospital and Dhaka University both shared this building. A few years later in 1939 Dhaka University Council requested that the British Government establish a separate medical college in Dhaka. After the Second World War in 1946 Finally, Dhaka Medical College was established. Then the college began admitting students and finally academic classes started on 10 July. 10th July also known as “DMC DAY”. For the first time Dhaka Medical College there were no female students.
Dhaka Medical College
started only four departments. The departments are MEDICINE, SURGERY, GYNECOLOGY, and OTOLARYNGOLOGY. Major W. J. Virgin was the first principal of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
In the history of Dhaka Medical College, there was no lecture hall or dissection gallery at first. In 1955 first, the new academic buildings were, but still, the medical college didn’t have any student housing, male students were allowed to reside in Dhaka University’s student halls. However female students did not have the use of that facility. Then the college and hospital premises were expanded with temporary sheds, some of which were built for outdoor services of the hospital and some for student housing. After that, in 1952 Dhaka Medical College made a dormitory for girls, and in 1954, 55 made a dormitory for male students and a new complex of academic buildings for administration. After that, in 1974 75 added a new dormitory for internee doctors.
Dhaka Medical College started only one building but now in 2019, DMCH consists of Male and female dormitories, a nuclear medicine center, and an auditorium. A burn unit and it’s scattered on about 25 acres of land. DMCH has 34 different departments in 42 wards. the original 100-bed hospital has grown to become Bangladesh’s largest hospital. The hospital now consists of about 2300 beds with a new academic and hospital building with a bone marrow transplantation facility rendering services to almost 3500 inpatients every day. 234+ doctors, 140+ interns, 560+ nurses, and 1100+ other staff are dedicated to ensuring 24-hour health services both indoors and outdoors.
