Do Your Eyes Lack Tears?

High screen time and desk work can lead to dry eye disease, a study has revealed. Read on for more information.

Imagine a situation where you want to cry but your eyes fail to produce tears. This may seem contrived but people with dry eye disease know the discomfort they experience. Just as having a lot of tears may seem odd, having no tears at all is also concerning. Let’s dive into what dry eye disease is and its related aspects in this article.

For healthy and comfortable eyes, tears are essential. The National Eye Institute reports that dry eye occurs when the eye does not produce enough tears to stay wet. This condition can also occur when the eyes do not make the right type of tears. As this process improves, it gradually increases the potential for other eye problems as well.

What Causes Dry Eyes?

A study published in the Indian Journal Of Ophthalmology concluded that the prevalence of dry eye disease is 32% in North India, in the age group of 21 to 40 years, which is most commonly affected. For the study, 15,625 patients were screened. Those numbers make it important to delve into the causes revealed by the study. It shows that desk work and high screen time are associated with an increased risk of disease. In addition, smokers and contact lens wearers have a higher likelihood of developing dry eye.

Separately, the American Academy Of Ophthalmology cites rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren’s syndrome, thyroid disease, lupus, blepharitis, LASIK eye surgery, allergies, antidepressants, and heartburn medications as other causes behind chronic dry eyes. Other causes include vitamin A deficiency and menopause.

Symptoms of Dry Eyes

Untreated dry eye disease can cause various complications. Therefore, it is important to see a doctor for relief, if:

  • You have an itchy or gritty feeling in your eyes.
  • Your eyes experience a burning or stinging sensation.
  • Your vision becomes blurry, especially when reading.
  • Your eyes become red and sensitive to light.

Knowing what is causing your dry eyes is important in the first place. In succession, the treatment becomes very important. In both, your ophthalmologist will play a major role in treating and providing relief from the disease.
