Blood pressure, or hypertension, is a product of today’s fast-paced environment and overwhelming physical and mental conditions. It is a silent illness that strikes without warning, giving it the nickname the “silent killer.” If it is not detected and treated early enough, it can lead to heart attack, stroke, eye problems, and kidney disease. Earlier, Onlymyhealth launched a campaign called ‘Focus of the Month, where we would highlight different categories every month. This month’s focus is ‘Healthy Living’ and in this article, we will talk about the most common chronic medical condition, hypertension or high blood pressure.
According to many studies, there are data where more than 11,000 patients have been hospitalized with COVID-19 in about 8 countries. It was shown that most patients had pre-existing comorbidities, including hypertension (42%) and diabetes (23%). High blood pressure was also associated with higher rates of death. Patients with baseline hypertension had a higher risk of death than those without baseline hypertension. We spoke to Dr. Babina NM, Chief Medical Officer, Jindal NatureCure Institute, to know the dos and don’ts of hypertension.
Dos and don’ts for, Hypertension
In our country, hypertension is one of the most common risk factors which is a major adversary of high mortality rate. If the stress in the environment increases, the hypertension level in the total Indian population will definitely increase. This results in an increase in the number of people taking high blood pressure medication. In order to control high blood pressure, it is crucial to adopt healthy habits during stressful situations like the Covid-19 pandemic. Also, focus on avoiding sedentary lifestyle habits.
Only my health There are activities that can help balance blood pressure levels in healthy ways, such as eating more fruits and vegetables, limiting smoking, less alcohol, exercising daily, practicing yoga, meditating, and reducing stress. According to Dr. Babina, here are some important dos and don’ts for hypertension or high blood pressure:
1. Take a healthy diet
Eating a nutritious diet rich in fruits and vegetables, low in sodium, and low in processed and packaged foods is an important lifestyle adjustment. Daily use of natural ingredients and herbs including garlic, ginger, cinnamon, basil, and flax seeds can help your body regulate blood pressure levels.
2. Don’t indulge in sedentary habits
A sedentary lifestyle is one of the main risk factors for high blood pressure. Do not indulge in unhealthy eating habits like eating high-cholesterol and fatty foods. You should also avoid smoking, high alcohol intake, excessive salt intake, and stress. This will not only increase your blood pressure levels but also negatively affect your overall health. Additionally, if not treated properly, high blood pressure can lead to several life-threatening health conditions.
3. Practice yoga
Naturopathy is known for its healing benefits to the body, while yoga helps maintain it. There are various yoga poses such as Shavasana, Chittashuddhi, and Yoganidra that can help in reducing blood pressure levels. Poses like yoga Nidra or chittashuddhi play a calming role which helps in achieving physical, mental, and emotional peace. Finally, Shavasana improves blood circulation, opens blood vessels, and improves the health of the endocrine glands and nervous system. It is also effective in removing accumulated toxins and metabolic waste from your body.
4. Acupuncture
Many high blood pressure patients benefit from the effects of acupuncture and it has helped many people. In fact, this alternative therapy can reduce their risk of stroke and heart failure. According to a study published by the International Journal of Hypertension, acupuncture has the potential to exert antihypertensive effects as an adjunctive treatment. It not only lowers blood pressure but can even protect target organs in your body.
