About Dr Patrick Ellinor

Patrick T. Elinor, MD, Ph.D. is acting chief of cardiology and co-director of the Corrigan Minhan Heart Center at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr. Elinor grew up in Cincinnati and graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a bachelor’s degree in biology. He attended Stanford University for medical and graduate school. After completing his doctoral work in the laboratory of Dr. Richard Sien, he moved to Boston for a medical residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Dr. Elinor joined the staff at MGH in 2001, served as Medical Director of the Cardiac Step-Down Unit for 13 years, and in 2016 became Director of the Telemachus and Irene Demoulas Family Foundation Center for Cardiac Arrhythmias. At the Broad Institute at MIT and Harvard, he is an institute member and director of the Cardiovascular Disease Initiative. He is a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Elinor’s research work has primarily focused on identifying the molecular basis of atrial fibrillation. His laboratories are at MGH’s Cardiovascular Research Center and the Broad Institute. Dr. Elinor currently helps lead the AFGen Consortium, an international group of investigators studying the genetics of atrial fibrillation. His lab has now expanded into a wide range of topics including the genetics of cardiovascular disease, disease mechanisms, single-cell sequencing, the application of machine learning to cardiac imaging data, and the development of new therapies for cardiovascular disease. Over the past 15 years, he has been continuously funded by the NIH, he has received funding from the American Heart Association, the Fondation Leduc, and the European Union. Dr. Elinor is a member of the American Heart Association, the Heart Rhythm Society, and the American Society of Clinical Investigation.
