About Dr Tatsuo Kawai

Dr. Tatsuo Kawai is a Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and Associate Professor of Transplant Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. Benedict Cosimi Chair.

His clinical and research interests primarily focus on the development of methods to induce immune tolerance in organ transplantation. He was the first to report a consistent model for the induction of renal allograft tolerance in nonhuman primates by a mixed chimerism approach. These and subsequent preclinical reports extended this approach to the world’s first clinical trials for induction of renal allograft tolerance in HLA mismatched kidney transplants. This was an early achievement of a clinical protocol that led to the first reproducibly successful induction of renal allograft tolerance in humans and was reported in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2008 and 2013.
