5 Home Care Tips For Dengue Patients

Dengue outbreak is increasing in the country which requires urgent management and public awareness. The national capital recorded over four hundred cases of dengue fever last week. Dengue is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito that bites a healthy person. This can lead to severe progression to dengue hemorrhagic fever which can be fatal. So it is very important to take proper care of dengue patients. As there is no specific treatment or medication for dengue, preventive care and symptom management are the only options. People with mild dengue infection can be treated at home. We have shared some effective home care tips for dengue patients in the article.

Dengue patients have high fever which needs to be controlled as persistent fever can be fatal for them. Other problems or symptoms of dengue that require monitoring and management are muscle and joint pain, dehydration, headache, light sensitivity, dry mouth, itchy skin, and rash. Home care should include ways to deal with these symptoms.

1. Manage Fever

High fever is disastrous for dengue patients. It can last for days and thus weaken the body. Therefore, control of fever is most important for dengue management. You must consult a doctor to check the patient’s health and well-being, especially for children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

2. Drink ample water and fluids

Dengue fever causes severe dehydration. The patient should drink water at regular intervals to combat dehydration and regulate body temperature. Drink only room-temperature water. Also, consume coconut water and ghee water daily to increase hydration and strengthen immunity.

3. Check Platelets Daily

One of the most important tips for dengue care at home is to monitor platelets regularly, if not daily. Dengue infection can cause a severe decrease in platelets which is very dangerous. In some cases, hospitalization may be required if platelets fall below 20,000. One should seek immediate medical help for platelet recovery.

One of the home remedies to increase platelets is drinking fresh papaya leaf juice. It is highly effective in increasing platelets. Also, drinking a glass of goat’s milk has similar benefits.

A mistake many people make to relieve muscle aches, joint pains, and headaches during dengue are taking painkillers. One should only take paracetamol to control body temperature or fever, and then only when the fever is dangerously high (102 degrees or higher).

5. Consume light food

Dengue attacks the immune system which can disrupt others, including your digestive system. One should eat light and healthy food like khichdi, Dalia or other porridges which are soft in the system and digested properly. Besides, oil-free and spice-free food help in faster recovery.

It is very important to protect yourself. Even if you recover from dengue, follow mosquito protection measures such as using mosquito repellent and wearing long sleeves. This will help provide additional protection.
