About Dr Myles Coolican
Dr Myles Coolican trained in Orthopaedic Surgery in Sydney and completed overseas fellowships in knee surgery and orthopaedic sports medicine at Addenbrooke’s Hospital Cambridge and The Cleveland Clinic. Whilst in Clevland, Dr Coolican worked as an assistant team physician with the Clevland Browns, Cavaliers & Indians & continued as a team doctor in Sydney with the New South Wales Waratahs the Northern Suburbs and Gordon Rugby Clubs. He has worked as a Visiting Medical Officer at Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH) since 1981 where he continues to teach fellows and orthopaedic trainees.
Dr Coolican’s practice centres around surgical treatment of knee the problem particularly computer-navigated knee arthroplasty & lower limb realignment for arthritis and deformity. His knee injury as a medical student gave him an interest in the treatment of ligamentous disruptions and he continues to treat injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament and other knee supporting structures.
Dr Coolican performs over 200 Total Knee Replacements each year, as well as over 75 ACL reconstructions. He also performs Revision Knee Replacements, Arthroscopic Knee Surgery and High Tibial Osteotomy.

Along with his colleague Dr David Parker, Doctor Coolican established the Sydney Orthopaedic Research Institute in 2002 & continues his research into injuries and diseases of the knee joint. He regularly presents at national & international meetings, publishes in peer-reviewed orthopaedic journals & has written many book chapters in orthopaedic texts. Dr Coolican’s overseas experience during his training has led to invaluable links with renowned international colleagues and active involvement with international orthopaedic organisations including ISAKOS and the Warhog Society.
Dr Coolican’s interests outside work include spending time with family as well as golf, and rugby and he still plays a game of touch rugby most weekends with friends of a similar vintage.
